Hormones & Hormone Quiz Hormone therapy starts with a complete evaluation of laboratory work and symptom analysis. Treating the Cause As we age, our hormones gets reduced, we get sicker, wrinkle and die. Treating and balancing the hormones at physiologic levels, is treating the cause! Thyroid function Knowledge of this thyroid physiology is important in knowing what thyroid test or tests are needed to diagnose different diseases. No one single laboratory test is 100% accurate in diagnosing all types of thyroid disease; however, a combination of two or more tests can usually detect even the slightest abnormality of thyroid function. http://www.endocrineweb.com/tests.html Common symptoms of problem with thyroid due to low thyroid or hypothyroidism are: 1. Repeat laboratory test (consider laboratory error, wrong patient, etc) 2. Clinical correlation/status 3. Patient occupation, past medical history, family history 4. Medications 5. Consider alternate tests 6. Consider common etiologies first 7. Prevention and treatment of osteoporosis are the major indications of HRT due to the ability of estrogens to delay bone loss, decreasing the risk of fracture. The most important aspect of osteoporosis management is prevention of the disease. A high peak bone mass before the menopause protects against the development of osteoporosis. For individuals at high risk such as women who have been oophorectomized at a young age, HRT may be used to prevent osteoporosis. An adequate dietary calcium intake should also be encouraged. Colorectal cancer Studies show that hormone therapy can decrease the risk of colorectal cancer. Cardiovascular disease Heart disease. Some data suggest that estrogen can decrease risk of heart disease when taken early in your postmenopausal years. A randomized, controlled clinical trial - the Kronos Early Estrogen Prevention Study (KEEPS) - exploring estrogen use and heart disease in younger postmenopausal women is under way. The administration of estrogen to postmenopausal women has been shown to result in the development of a less atherogenic lipid profile. HRT administration reduces lipoprotein concentration and produces an increase in blood flow. Hence the postmenopausal use of estrogen with or without progesterone is expected to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, especially in women with hypertension, obesity, diabetes mellitus, and in those who smoke or lead a sedentary life. However, the use of estrogen for prophylactic purposes needs to be long-term, but first, subjects must be thoroughly assessed before a decision to begin HRT is made. Alzheimer's disease Due to the increase in female and male longevity, the incidence of Alzheimer's disease is also expected to increase. There are convincing data to suggest that the use of HRT delays the onset and reduces the risk of Alzheimer's disease as well as delaying its progression. Improved Quality of Life The major benefit of Hormone therapy as reported by people who use it is the improved quality of life and relief of symptoms. Quality of life cannot be quantified. Improved mood, feeling of well-being, and self-satisfaction The typical menopausal woman today holds optimistic beliefs about maintaining her femininity and sexuality. Unfortunately, she may be confused about how to do that and what to expect. There is no doubt that taking hormones after menopause does have direct beneficial effects on mood and behavior, and therefore on the quality of life. Relief of Hot Flashes The relief of hot flashes is the most significant benefit you will perceive soon after starting HRT. Estrogens are remarkably effective in eliminating this annoying symptom. Hot flashes can occur during the day or at night, as "night sweats," and can cause sleeping disturbance up to and including the need to shower, change night clothing, and change bedding. HRT brings relief from hot flashes and an improvement in sleep. Improved Mental Outlook Studies have shown conclusively that estrogen improves the mood of women who had lost ovarian function. It is known that estrogens have many effects within the brain and the nervous system. This tonifying effect of hormones, which is perceived as a feeling of overall well-being, goes beyond the fact that the hot flashes have been relieved. Women often describe a feeling of revitalization and of being reborn, which translates into better performance of daily duties and greater enjoyment of daily pleasures. These women feel more alert and better able to function. Depression Estrogen reduces the minor depression that some women experience after menopause. Major, continuing depression, however, requires a different therapy. Diabetes The treatment of Diabetes with Testosterone along with other therapies is well document and used by many physicians Enhanced Quality of Sleep: Studies at Harvard confirmed that estrogens enhanced the quality of sleep. We know that stopping the night sweats for women suffering hot flashes improve their sleep. Women without night sweats experienced an improvement in REM sleep (rapid eye movement-the good sleep). This improvement occurred for all the women on HRT. There was a deterioration of REM sleep in women deprived of HRT. Improved Short-Term Memory Improved short-term memory is a distinct advantage of HRT. A study performed at King's College Hospital, London, England found a distinct difference in short-term memory between women who had active ovaries or were on postmenopausal HRT as compared to menopausal women without ovaries or HRT. Other studies have confirmed these findings, and continue to provide evidence that when women take estrogen their short-term memory improves. Disease Prevention Hormone Therapy that balances the body can reduce the incidence of diseases just as younger people have lower incidence of diseases compared to older people. Anti-Aging Balancing hormones at physiologic doses can reduce diseases and stress on the body, improve the quality of life leading to a more youthful appearance and satisfaction of quality of life Increasing Libido Hormones are important in the production of sex hormones. A healthy sex drive should be able to be maintained even at a very old age. Disclosure: Our Clinic would not use prescribe hormones to body builders or to persons that are not hormone deficient and where is not approved by the law We believe in balancing the body at physiologic doses of hormone levels.
